Introducing the First UL 3700-Certified Plug-In Solar Microinverter Now on the U.S. Market!

A move towards making renewable energy more accessible for renters and individuals in smaller living spaces.

Recently, Hoymiles introduced its HiFlow Pro microinverter, designed to harness solar energy via standard home outlets. Several states have enacted laws allowing this plug-in solar technology, with more considering similar legislation. According to reports, although microinverters are already available in the market, Hoymiles’ model is remarkable as it is the first in the United States that complies with newly established national safety standards. Implemented in December 2025, UL 3700 marks the initial North American safety guidelines for plug-in photovoltaic systems, commonly known as “balcony solar.”

A primary concern with these compact solar panels is the danger that, because the converters draw electricity from a socket, power could flow into the grid during outages. This poses risks for utility workers engaged in restoring services, prompting UL 3700 to introduce standardized safety features aimed at preventing unintentional overloads and addressing other safety issues.

While plug-in solar systems may not provide enough energy to power an entire apartment, they present an opportunity to lessen dependence on the electrical grid without the need for a full array of solar panels. Establishing a federal standard for these smaller systems broadens the potential audience for solar energy, making it accessible to renters and individuals living in apartments who cannot accommodate traditional rooftop installations.
