5 Gemini Limitations That Make Me Grateful for ChatGPT

By Stephen Radochia
Gemini stands out as a versatile tool in the AI landscape, supported by Google and seamlessly integrated into Android for functionalities that many other chatbots lack. The speed with which Google has developed Gemini to compete with established players is noteworthy. However, ChatGPT still seems to leverage its initial advantage, maintaining a lead in usability and the quality of its responses.
I often switch between Gemini and ChatGPT to handle various tasks and use both extensively. Despite having access to Gemini’s extensive features through my Google AI Pro plan, I still maintain my ChatGPT subscription. This is primarily because Gemini does not yet feel fully reliable, and here’s why.
If you could only keep one AI subscription, which would you choose?

Struggles with complex instructions
By Dhruv Bhutani
There have been multiple instances where I’ve provided Gemini with long instructions only for it to ignore parts of them entirely. This occurs not only in one-on-one chats but also in Notebooks, which should consolidate information from different discussions. Recently, while attempting to use Gemini as a comprehensive expense manager, I consistently encountered issues with it following my instructions.
Moreover, the scheduled tasks feature in Gemini has been non-functional for weeks now. I’ve tried restarting the schedule and toggling it on manually, but nothing has worked. Whether this is a technical glitch or something else, Gemini currently feels unfinished and unreliable, needing further refinement.
While I could overlook these minor setbacks, my experience with ChatGPT over the past few years has been far more consistent and dependable, making it hard to ignore Gemini’s issues.
Lack of a shared history
By Dhruv Bhutani
This point is somewhat subjective, but it is important to me as I have been using ChatGPT for a long time. It retains a considerable amount of my personal context from numerous chats, both professional and personal.
This level of personalization is difficult to recreate with a new chatbot. Despite Gemini’s advanced features through the Google ecosystem, it hasn’t reached a similar level of personalization for me. Though it has a tool to import previous chats from other AI, I haven’t felt motivated to switch completely due to the ongoing reliability concerns.
Inferior image generation
By Dhruv Bhutani
While Gemini has demonstrated some capability in image creation and editing, ChatGPT’s newly launched image generation model reveals a significant performance gap. In my experience with photo edits, Gemini consistently misjudges colors, even when specific hex codes are provided. The alterations often result in images appearing overly bright or dull.
Though ChatGPT is not a professional editor by any means, it adheres better to my instructions and maintains color consistency across edits. While Gemini may be quicker in generating visuals, I am more inclined to wait for the higher quality output from ChatGPT.
Surprisingly poor web search capabilities
Considering that Gemini is a Google product, I expected it to excel in web searching capabilities, yet that has not been the case. I rely on AI tools for my morning updates and tech news summaries.
At the start of my work day, I ask both Gemini and ChatGPT to scour specific websites for key updates. Unfortunately, despite my requests for thorough summaries, Gemini often overlooks crucial information that ChatGPT tends to capture more reliably. It’s disappointing how inadequate Gemini appears in fetching real-time information from the web.
Closed ecosystem limitations
By Tushar Mehta
Gemini is quite effective for users entrenched within the Google ecosystem, offering integration with services like Gmail, Docs, and Keep. However, its lack of connectivity with external tools is a drawback, especially for those who use non-Google apps regularly—a gap that ChatGPT effectively bridges.
For example, while Gemini can only assist with music recommendations on YouTube Music, ChatGPT seamlessly interfaces with both Spotify and Apple Music. Additionally, it can connect with various third-party travel services and delivery platforms like DoorDash and Uber, which enhances its utility. I particularly appreciate its integration with Canva, allowing for effortless image editing and generation based on prompts.
After using both platforms extensively, I’ve noticed I reflexively gravitate towards ChatGPT without thinking. If a question arises, the URL for ChatGPT is the one my fingers instinctively type. This instinctive behavior highlights the challenge Gemini faces in redefining my usage habits, which will require significant effort to achieve.
