Introducing Stario Launcher, an Android launcher that has surprisingly remained under the radar despite being in development since 2024. It stands out as perhaps the most visually appealing launcher available for Android devices.

Featuring a range of custom animations, widgets, and organizational tools, Stario Launcher provides an elegant and user-friendly home screen. Its refreshing aesthetics differentiate it from the multitude of other launchers currently available.

However, there is a significant issue: Stario Launcher appears to be on the verge of being discontinued, largely due to changes implemented by Google.

Making the Most of Stario Before It’s Gone

Before delving into the issues facing Stario Launcher, it’s important to highlight its strengths.

Stario prioritizes design without compromising functionality or speed. Drawing inspiration from Google’s Material Design, it combines elegance with usability, making it particularly adapted for use on Pixel devices.

The minimalist home screen can be striking, especially for users accustomed to more cluttered interfaces. Yet, it emphasizes a beautiful background that enhances the overall experience.

While not entirely empty, the main screen features a clock widget, a calendar/weather widget, a media widget that appears when in use, and a customizable app category dock that can be adjusted as needed.

app categories

Stario organizes apps into categories, displaying the app drawer when swiped up from the main screen. However, the categorization isn’t always accurate; some apps end up in the “Unsorted” section, which can be frustrating. Thankfully, users have the option to recategorize their apps manually.

This organization lends a tidy feel to the launcher, and the search function is conveniently located for quick access. The feature-rich search mimics that of the Pixel Launcher, allowing for direct results and searching within various apps, though some users may find its execution lacking.

search feature

One standout feature is the Briefing page, serving as a customizable RSS reader, allowing users to curate their news feeds without the clutter of Google Discover. This level of personalization enhances the overall user experience.

Additionally, a dedicated widget page enables users to display multiple widgets, making this feature particularly appealing to widget enthusiasts. However, newly added widgets initially appear at the top, which can create confusion.

Although Stario contains several captivating features, the future of the launcher is now uncertain.

Challenges Posed by Google’s Policies

You might be curious as to why I’m highlighting Google in this discussion, especially given that Stario is an open-source initiative. However, it highlights a systemic issue affecting many developers.

Recently, Stario Launcher’s developer announced plans to halt the project, citing restrictions imposed by Google as the primary reason. While users may fork the code, the current version will no longer receive any updates.

The developer expressed concerns over upcoming changes that could stifle innovation on the Android platform. As these changes roll out, using apps outside the Play Store may become much more challenging.

As the developer put it, these modifications diminish the motivation to continue behind the project.

The proposed restrictions will burden developers aiming to create and maintain third-party apps, potentially leading to a significant reduction in available software for users.

This is a warning not just for Stario, but for a range of beloved third-party applications that may face similar issues due to Google’s tightening grip.

While Stario may not be the only app facing these challenges, it is a reflection of a broader trend that could threaten the diversity of options available to Android users.

Although Stario Launcher may not offer the most extensive features compared to other launchers, its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. The integration of functionality, search capabilities, and news feeds makes it a unique contender. Unfortunately, Google’s policies are obstructing its future prospects.

If you are looking for a visually appealing and smooth launcher for an older device, Stario is worth trying. However, the future of this app remains uncertain, and it remains to be seen if someone can revive it post-Google’s changes.
