The Enduring Significance of Plugable in an Era Overrun by Generic USB-C Docks

Seventeen years ago, Plugable launched its first universal docking station, the UD-160-A. It was a simple yet effective USB 2.0 device designed to enhance laptop functionality without requiring specific connectors or complex setups.

Fast forward to today, the market is flooded with universal docking stations and economical USB-C hubs that provide basic multi-port and multi-monitor capabilities with minimal configuration. This raises the question: how does a brand like Plugable maintain its competitive edge? To explore this, I met with Plugable’s founder and CTO, Bernie Thompson, during Computex 2026 in Taipei after a brief conversation with the company’s CEO, Lynn Smurthwaite-Murphy.

What I uncovered about Plugable’s success was both surprising and straightforward: the company focuses on addressing significant and often overlooked challenges faced by users and competitors.

Plugable: A Solution-Oriented Approach

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Historically, laptop docking stations were cumbersome and limited, providing only basic functions like video output and port expansion. They were often brand-specific, making it impossible for users to share docking solutions even within the same brand, which created complications in shared environments such as offices and classrooms.

Many users recognized the frustrations associated with these proprietary docking stations, which were required to perform at a hardware level due to limitations in software-driven solutions caused by bandwidth and latency issues. This meant that many laptops came equipped with peculiar multi-pin connectors, allowing docking stations to connect directly to the motherboard.

If one were to tackle the issues presented by proprietary docking stations, the options were limited: persuade manufacturers to adopt a universal hardware connector or leverage an existing data port standard across laptops. With USB 2.0 ports becoming standard in Windows PCs starting in the early 2000s, docking stations could be seen as a software-driven issue rather than a hardware challenge. But achieving the needed functionality over a slower USB 2.0 connection was a formidable task.

Enter Bernie Thompson. When he introduced the UD-160-A in 2009, he was equipped with experience from Microsoft, where he managed Bluetooth and USB teams, and DisplayLink, a pioneer in virtual display technology. This docking station broadened laptop capabilities by combining existing technologies in a way that hadn’t been attempted before, achieving this even at a limited video resolution that improved shortly after its initial release.

Resilience in the Age of USB-C

The Complexity of Universal Standards

Plugable successfully transformed USB 2.0 into a viable docking station platform by integrating technologies like DisplayLink and USB Ethernet. However, the introduction of USB-C in mid-2014 posed a potential threat to Plugable’s business. Major laptop manufacturers were eager to incorporate comprehensive functionality into a single, next-generation USB standard.

USB-C supports video output and charging globally, allowing connected monitors to act as hubs—a trend seen in modern monitors. Thunderbolt expanded upon this by enhancing capabilities for high-resolution multi-monitor setups and faster data transfer rates.

Ironically, the rise of USB-C has only fueled the demand for independent docking stations and USB hubs due to a lack of standardized implementation. Many cables and devices do not support the complete range of USB-C functionalities, often leading to unpredictable performance due to inconsistent adherence to USB-IF specifications. Most cables are unlabelled, adding to the confusion for users attempting to ensure full functionality.

During my discussion with Thompson, he expressed concern about how manufacturers often shortcut the rigorous standards of USB-C, impacting reliability and leading to customer frustration.

Plugable’s first Thunderbolt 3 dock, the UD-ULTCDL, was launched via Kickstarter in 2016 and managed to turn the ambitions of USB-C into practical applications. While many competitors struggled with compliance and video output quality, the UD-ULTCDL adhered to regulations while employing DisplayLink technology to support triple-monitor configurations—a market first. Additionally, it offered significant passthrough charging, Ethernet connection, and multiple USB ports.

Remarkably, the UD-ULTCDL remains available nearly a decade later, despite cheaper alternatives flooding the market. Thompson pointed out that IT departments prefer reliable products that minimize support requests.

Thanks to its full compliance with USB and Thunderbolt standards, the UD-ULTCDL remains a dependable choice. It has also become invaluable in enterprise environments, particularly for its ability to bypass display limitations inherent in newer Apple devices.

The company emphasizes customer relations through a two-year warranty and lifetime support, crucial for understanding and addressing the issues its primary clientele encounters daily.

Addressing Overlooked Modern Needs

Innovations Built on Years of Strategy

Plugable’s newer products subtly address specific challenges more common in office settings. The PS-10CC and PS-6CC multi-port chargers, while looking like standard USB-C adapters, incorporate a feature known as PriorityShare. This innovation dynamically adjusts power allocation based on the charging needs of devices—delivering priority to those that require it most.

While not a necessity for the average user, this feature offers efficiency for power-hungry environments, like workplaces that need multiple devices charged simultaneously. It proves beneficial in shared spaces and can alleviate issues in high-demand settings.

During my time at Computex, I encountered other brands showcasing uncertified Thunderbolt 5 products struggling with Intel’s stringent certification requirements. Plugable, however, had its TB5 eGPU enclosure certified, ensuring reliability for enterprise customers, which can’t be overlooked when investing in advanced technological setups.

Plugable’s Thunderbolt 5 dock, the TBT-UDT3, illustrates the evolution of capabilities. It supports higher bandwidth than its predecessors, integrating features that allow shared peripherals and efficient file syncing across multiple computers—a modern need in collaborative environments.

Final Thoughts on Enthusiasts

It was disheartening to realize that many technology enthusiasts find themselves temporarily excluded from a market that should be accessible. While Plugable’s products are reasonably priced, they require significant investments in related technology to fully benefit from them. As the industry evolves, it’s essential to keep enthusiasts in mind, as they play a pivotal role in driving innovation and change.
