Summary:

  • OpenClaw has introduced official apps for both Android and iOS.
  • The Android version allows users to communicate with the AI assistant, utilize voice features, and manage tasks through an OpenClaw Gateway.
  • While the launch generated excitement, initial users have raised concerns regarding the app’s design and usability.

After much anticipation, OpenClaw has released its applications for Android and iOS, enabling users to engage with the AI assistant directly from their mobile devices. However, the launch has not been without its flaws, as many initial users express dissatisfaction with the app’s interface and the pairing process.

For those unfamiliar, OpenClaw is an open-source AI assistant that operates on local or cloud-based machines. The new Android app connects with users’ personal OpenClaw Gateways, transforming their phones into a companion for their AI assistant.

The Play Store listing describes features such as pairing with the OpenClaw Gateway via QR code or setup code. Once connected, users can communicate with their assistant, utilize a real-time voice mode, approve actions from the Gateway, and receive notifications about connected tasks.

With appropriate permissions, the app can access device functionalities like the camera, location, and notifications. OpenClaw emphasizes a “local-first” approach, ensuring users control their Gateway and encryption keys through a conventional permission system.

Using the OpenClaw app is relatively simple; users set up their OpenClaw Gateway, connect the Android app, and commence utilizing features like chat, voice mode, approvals, and automations directly from their devices.

Despite the appealing feature set, the feedback from the OpenClaw community has been largely critical.

Many users have voiced their frustrations on social media regarding the incomplete feel of the interface. Reports have emerged of users being unable to pair with their Gateways, while others who managed to connect noted that various functions failed to operate as expected. While some appreciated the concept, they deemed the current execution lacking, characterizing both the Android and iOS versions as quite unrefined.

Although issues on launch day are not uncommon for new software projects, the developers at OpenClaw must address user feedback and bug reports to enhance the application’s functionality.
