Report Reveals Russian Hackers Orchestrated $2.5 Billion Breach at Jaguar Land Rover

In the previous year, a cyberattack targeted the major automobile manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JPL), severely impacting one of the largest workforces in the U.K. The attack disrupted production for several months and negatively affected the national economy. The situation escalated to the point where the U.K. government intervened, providing a bailout of £1.5 billion (approximately $2 billion), with the total economic losses from the incident estimated at $2.5 billion.

For a lengthy period, the identity of the perpetrators remained uncertain. However, recent reports suggest that the hackers involved in the breach had ties to Russia. It remains ambiguous whether they were acting on behalf of the Russian government, as independent criminals, or possibly as individuals operating with government endorsement.

According to reports, Microsoft was monitoring the Russian hacking group and shared information regarding their identities with JLR. Additionally, various organizations, including the FBI, the National Crime Agency of Britain, the National Cyber Security Centre, as well as cybersecurity firms like Google’s Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks, were engaged in the investigation.

In a notable twist, it was discovered that a Jordanian hacker, known by the alias Rey, had also gained unauthorized access to some of JPL’s networks, highlighting that multiple entities were involved in the breach.
