Anker SOLIX S2000 Review: The Ultimate Home Power Backup Solution

When it comes to home backup battery systems, size and heft aren’t always necessary. The Anker SOLIX S2000 stands out as a compact alternative among competitors, ensuring essential devices can stay powered for several days. It boasts high efficiency, minimizing energy waste for upkeep. Designed primarily for home backup scenarios, it offers an abundance of AC ports but has limited USB connectivity.

Portable power stations often evoke images of outdoor adventures. Thoughts of camping or exploring in an RV come to mind. However, for many, these devices are most valuable during home power outages, where electricity transforms from luxury to necessity.

The Anker SOLIX S2000 is tailored for this exact situation, providing backup power for essentials such as refrigerators, routers, and critical medical devices like CPAP machines. While its applications extend beyond this, its design is particularly attuned to these needs. Having used it extensively to push its limits, here’s an in-depth look at my experience after a week.

Design and Build Quality

Typically, power stations of this type are built with portability in mind for easy transport, whether to and from a vehicle or a camping site. The SOLIX S2000, however, is designed more for stationary use at home.

Weighing 35.7 lbs and measuring 8.2 × 11.1 × 12.7 in, while still manageable, it does not have a dedicated carrying handle. The indentations on its sides serve as makeshift grips, but they lack the comfort found in dedicated portable units. The square design isn’t ideal for easy carrying but fits well in typical home settings.

“This unit is remarkably compact for a 2,010Wh battery.”

The dimensions and weight are indeed impressive. My immediate impression was how small it appeared compared to my competitor, the DJI Power 2000, which offers similar capacity yet is far bulkier. Anker claims it’s the “smallest and lightest 2kWh power station” available, and I can’t argue with that.

Additionally, Anker is known for its quality construction. The design seamlessly blends with any interior decor and feels robust, despite being primarily plastic. The quality of materials used reinforces its durability.

Two AC ports located on the back of the unit are a thoughtful design feature. This allows for a tidier setup by concealing cables connected to devices that will remain plugged in permanently, such as a refrigerator.

Ports: AC Outlets Take Center Stage

The focus on AC outlets is evident. The device includes five in total, with two situated at the rear and three at the front. This configuration allows for a neat aesthetic by hiding cables for devices that remain plugged in.

However, there’s a trade-off. The USB options are limited to two USB-C ports and one USB-A port. One of the USB-C ports can deliver up to 100W, while the other offers a maximum of 15W. The USB-A port maxes out at 12W but shares the 18W maximum output with the two USB-C ports.

“The SOLIX S2000 maintains a streamlined look with hidden AC outlets at the back.”

While more USB ports would have been appreciated, the current selection suits its intended use. I powered appliances such as my fridge, kettle, and microwave, which formed the core of my kitchen setup during an outage. I primarily used the USB ports for occasional testing rather than regular use.

The power station includes an AC input for recharging and a DC solar panel input, which will be discussed in more detail in the solar charging section. This feature is crucial for prolonging battery life during power outages.

Compact Yet Powerful

Though the Anker SOLIX S2000 seems small, it is impressively powerful. With a battery capacity of 2,010Wh, the efficiency measures taken ensure minimal energy loss. Operative measures mean it consumes only 6W to keep AC outlets ready, and a mere 2W when they are off, indicating market-leading idle power consumption.

How does that performance translate into operational longevity? I fully charged the unit initially and then connected it to my fridge, kettle, and microwave to mimic a power outage. When I disconnected it at 6:55 PM on May 25th, the battery level was still at 84% by the next morning. After almost 48 hours, it had 46% remaining, and by the morning of the third day, it dropped to 10%.

“The Anker SOLIX S2000 can support my kitchen for over 60 hours without energy conservation efforts.”

This indicates the battery can power my kitchen essentials for over 60 hours, a timeframe that exceeds any outage I’ve faced thus far. Importantly, I wasn’t conservative with my usage. Although my fridge is smaller and consumes around 50-60W while cooling, the kettle and microwave are heavier users, with the kettle draining the battery by 6% per use due to its 1,000W consumption.

Since no actual power outage occurred, I had no urgency to limit my energy consumption, so I could have certainly achieved longer runtimes with more restraint. Individual experiences may vary, but this device’s efficiency is noteworthy.

It also demonstrates impressive power capabilities, being able to run 99% of home appliances. With an output of 1,500W and peak support of 3,000W, there are few devices it cannot manage, provided they aren’t used simultaneously.

An important feature is its 10ms UPS support during outages. This allows for almost immediate transitions to battery power, ensuring appliances remain operational without interruption.

For my first testing phase, I discharged the battery to 10% and would need to recharge it. If you’re in a hurry, Anker provides an UltraFast Charging mode that requires activation via the app. This mode reaches 1,600W, fully recharging the battery in under two hours.

While it’s a handy feature for quick recharges, high output also leads to increased heat generation, resulting in loud fan noise. It became noticeably noisy under heavy load, yet at standard output levels, the noise is tolerable, charging at 1,150W without the UltraFast option.

You can also utilize a 400W solar panel, potentially achieving an 80% charge within about 4.5 hours under optimal sunlight conditions. The same DC port is available for charging via a car socket at 120W or through a car alternator charger at 400W.

While functionality is crucial in a power station, several competitors lack convenient energy management. The SOLIX S2000 impresses with its effortless energy management capabilities.

You can tailor the recharge rate, setting it as low as 100W to minimize heat production, which helps extend battery lifespan. This model, equipped with a LiFePO4 (LFP) battery, is rated for 10,000 cycles, emphasizing the importance of longevity. Lower heat translates to quieter fan operation, and users can enable Silent Mode in the settings for quieter usage.

Moreover, limiting standard charging to under 100% whenever possible promotes battery health. Within the SOC settings, you can set both maximum charge and discharge levels. Personally, I configured mine to stop discharging at 5% and charge only up to 80%.

The Power Usage Scenario settings are another notable feature, with various modes like Standard Mode to keep the battery ready for usage. Other modes can save money on energy costs.

“The Anker SOLIX S2000 can reduce costs related to peak electricity pricing and food spoilage, essentially making it a cost-effective investment over time.”

In California, where I reside, high costs of living and peak electricity rates are realities. The Time of Use Mode can help avoid those costly peak rates. By setting charging times to off-peak hours, the battery will draw from its stored power during peak usage times, ensuring no grid power consumption during those hours. Given the 60% cost increase on peak pricing, this could lead to significant savings over time.

My charging frequency felt excessive for my needs, so I selected Custom Mode, scheduling it to charge every other day during off-peak times. There’s also a Self-Consumption Mode to optimize solar energy usage effectively.

A convenient feature is Storm Guard, which monitors forecasts and ensures the battery is charged and ready for power outages.

My primary criticisms of the Anker SOLIX S2000 are the limited quantity of USB ports and the lack of a comfortable handle for easy transport. However, the frontside indentations offer sufficient grip for indoor mobility, whereas the existing USB options cater mainly to AC-powered devices, fulfilling the unit’s intended purpose.

In summary, this device is primarily a stationary power station designed to keep essential electronics functional during outages, which is evident from its capabilities of powering fridges, routers, and CPAP machines, rather than smaller gadgets.

Its substantial 2kWh capacity is more than adequate for most outage durations, complemented by an impressively low idle power draw. Larger batteries often waste significant energy merely staying operational.

“While often seen as a luxury for recreational outings, a power station becomes vital in times of need. The Anker SOLIX S2000 excels in providing essential power when required.”

For the right individual, this product proves to be an excellent selection. While its MSRP of $1,199.99 may seem steep, it is competitively priced compared to the DJI Power 2000 at $1,299. For those desiring more portability, Anker’s SOLIX C2000 Gen 2 is available at $1,499.99.

Overall, power stations are often found at discounted prices, and the SOLIX S2000 has on occasion been offered at over half off since its release, making it a compelling option. Its appealing design, reliability, efficiency, and ample AC ports enhance its suitability as an emergency backup solution.
