The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra boasts an impressive camera setup, larger screen, enhanced battery life, and several design improvements that distinguish it from the standard model. While it is slimmer, it is also a bit heavier than its counterpart.
There are many appealing features of the Ultra, but if you’re seeking a strong performer without the additional enhancements, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is certainly worth considering.
Powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor as the Ultra model and featuring 12GB of RAM, the Fold 8 is only different in that the Ultra version offers an upgrade to 16GB RAM, which may not be noticeable in everyday tasks. While it lacks the 200MP main camera and telephoto lens of the Ultra, the 50MP ultrawide sensor is quite competent for those who prioritize reliability over peak performance.
Design-wise, the Fold 8 retains a more compact structure, using similar hinge technology from previous models. In contrast, the Ultra incorporates a refined hinge that improves durability and enhances the overall feel. The new titanium alloy layer on the OLED panel also adds to its sturdiness.
Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 provides a smaller price tag, being $200 less than the Ultra. If budget is your priority, opting for the base model might be a wise decision.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 serves as a notable alternative. Although it runs on the slightly older Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, it still comes with 12GB or 16GB of RAM. For those unwilling to pay the high price of the Fold 8 Ultra, the Fold 7 closely matches the Ultra’s specifications.
The new Fold 8 has a more compact design with a 7.6-inch display, while the Fold 7 maintains the 8-inch display and thickness of its Ultra-tier successor. Furthermore, the camera specification on the Fold 7 supersedes that of the standard Fold 8. Both the Fold 7 and Fold 8 Ultra offer a 200MP main camera and a 10MP telephoto lens, but the Fold 7’s ultrawide camera is a lesser 12MP sensor.
While the Fold 7 lacks the improved hinge and gap adjustments found in the Ultra, it offers a product that is more comparable to the Fold 8 than the base model. Additionally, it is available for as low as $1,200 through renewal programs. New, it can be purchased for around $1,700 or less. Altogether, the Fold 7 is a compelling alternative to the Fold 8 Ultra.

Motorola Razr Fold

Joe Maring / Android Authority
Motorola’s Razr Fold is its first attempt at a book-style foldable, and it manages to perform impressively. Like the Z Fold 8 Ultra, it offers choices between 12GB or 16GB of RAM. The Razr Fold also features a slightly larger 8.1-inch display and a robust 6,000mAh battery, along with faster 80W wired and 50W wireless charging.
While it may not match the slimness or lightness of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the device offers a polished look and feel, especially for a first-generation foldable. It does have some drawbacks, however.
The Razr Fold sports an impressive 50MP periscope camera, but its main camera is less striking with a 50MP sensor compared to the 200MP main camera of the Fold 8 Ultra. While this difference may not greatly impact day-to-day use, it is noticeable on paper.
With a starting price $200 less than the Z Fold 8 Ultra, these trade-offs become easier to accept. The Razr Fold is certainly worth considering as an alternative.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8

For those interested in foldables but not necessarily committed to a tablet-like format, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 presents a unique option. Unlike the Fold series that focus on productivity, the Flip design celebrates the nostalgia of flip phones.
As the thinnest and lightest version yet, the Flip 8 is equipped with Qualcomm processors. While previous models featured Exynos chips, U.S. buyers will receive the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 along with 12GB of RAM.
Looking for a foldable that isn’t like the others? The Flip saves money while making a statement.
In addition to the Snapdragon processor, the Flip 8’s specs remain relatively similar to its predecessor. It continues to come with a 50MP wide-angle camera and a 12MP ultrawide lens. While these may not match the camera performance of the Fold 8 Ultra, they are likely sufficient for casual photography. Limited new hardware features are present, but software enhancements such as a redesigned home screen and improved quick settings can enhance the user experience.
All things considered, the Flip 8 may be a better pick for those seeking a distinct device. Plus, with a starting price of $1,200, it offers significant savings compared to other models.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra

While you may be focused on foldable options, it’s worth considering the potential downsides of this format. Personally, I’ve enjoyed using foldables, but I now question if they are truly worth the investment after years of experience.
If you’re looking for a premium experience without some of the limitations often seen with foldables, you might consider the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, which is similarly priced to the Flip 8 and sometimes available for even less. This model features the same elite Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and an impressive camera lineup, including a 200MP main camera, along with a 50MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto, and a 50MP periscope lens.
While the S26 Ultra doesn’t offer a large foldable display, it does have a fantastic 6.9-inch AMOLED screen, outstanding battery longevity, and 60W charging that surpasses the 45W charging of the Fold 8 Ultra. Additionally, The S26 Ultra includes support for the S Pen, a feature no longer offered by the Fold models, making it a strong option for fans of stylus-based interaction.
