Google’s Eyewear Collaborators Struggle to Contain Smart Glasses Ambitions

Gentle Monster has announced that its “Intelligent Eyewear” will be available for pre-order starting November 12.
Gentle Monster revealed that its adaptation of Google’s Android XR smart glasses will be launched in December, with pre-orders beginning on November 12. This coincides with a date mistakenly released by Warby Parker recently. Both eyewear brands, together with Samsung, are collaborating with Google on this initiative, which aims to compete with Meta’s offerings and bring a new iteration of Google Glass to the market. However, official confirmation from Google on these dates is still pending.
To coincide with the announcement, the brand shared a teaser for a short film directed by Jonathan Glazer, known for his work on Under the Skin. The film features Joaquin Phoenix, who previously portrayed a character in love with an AI in Her. A complete version of this short will be released in mid-November, showcasing a more artistic approach rather than a typical advertisement.
Google’s Android XR platform is designed to support various applications ranging from mixed reality on the Samsung Galaxy XR to augmented reality with the Xreal Aura. Gentle Monster and Warby Parker’s smart glasses will focus on an audio-first experience without a display, providing access to the Gemini system.
While the market reception for this “Intelligent Eyewear” remains uncertain, Google seems optimistic that associating technology with reputable brands will mitigate any potential criticism. With both Gentle Monster and Warby Parker set to launch soon, it won’t be long before we see how well this strategy plays out.
