Audi Unveils the Three-Row SUV That Puts Mercedes and BMW in the Rearview Mirror

Audi has officially launched its newest flagship model, the Q9, alongside the performance-oriented SQ9, on July 28, 2026. As the brand’s largest SUV to date, the Q9 aims to carve its place in the competitive full-size luxury SUV market, where it will face formidable competitors, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
This introduction marks a pivotal moment for Audi, possibly overdue in enhancing their SUV lineup.
The Q9 will be positioned above the recently updated Q7, offering an unmatched level of space, comfort, and state-of-the-art technology. Those desiring a sportier drive can opt for the SQ9, which boasts an impressive 591 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.8 seconds.
The Q9 Delivers True Full-Size SUV Capability
Accommodations for Seven Passengers and Their Gear
Measuring 209 inches in length with a 123.5-inch wheelbase, the Q9 may initially appear similar to a larger Q7, but it was specifically engineered for the premium full-size SUV market where spaciousness is as vital as power. And it certainly excels in both areas.
While many three-row SUVs have third rows primarily suited for children, the Q9 offers comfortable seating for adults, thanks to its extended wheelbase and innovative seating arrangements. The second-row seats can slide and tilt electronically, allowing easy access to the third row without needing to remove a child seat. Potential buyers can select either a standard seven-passenger configuration or an available six-seat setup with power-adjustable captain’s chairs in the second row.
In terms of cargo space, the Q9 offers 19.3 cubic feet behind the third row. If both the second and third rows are folded down, the space expands to 87.7 cubic feet—comparable capacity to rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 and the BMW X7, which offers slightly larger maximum cargo spaces.
The Most Luxurious Audi SUV Ever
A High-Tech Interior for a Premium Experience
The interior of the Q9 is designed to evoke a “lounge-like atmosphere,” featuring ample space and front seats with options for ventilation and massage functions. Heated armrests and luxurious materials like open-pore wood trim and Nappa leather further demonstrate Audi’s commitment to customer preferences.
Audi has incorporated its largest panoramic sunroof, which spans over 16 square feet. Customers can also choose switchable transparency for the sunroof and personalized ambient lighting.
The cab’s centerpiece is Audi’s “Digital Stage,” encompassing the Virtual Cockpit, a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, and an optional 12.3-inch display for passengers, creating a cohesive digital experience. Additional features include Amazon Alexa integration, wireless phone charging, and multiple USB-C ports.
For audiophiles, an optional Bang & Olufsen 4D sound system provides an immersive audio experience, incorporating seat-mounted actuators that let passengers feel bass beats, mirroring the excitement of a live concert, complemented by 22 speakers and advanced sound processing technology.
If the Q9 is Fast, the SQ9 is Truly Exceptional
Performance Innovations with a Rear-Biased Quattro System
Audi has ensured that performance is not sidelined in the Q9. It features a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine that delivers 429 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and standard quattro all-wheel drive, it can reach 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds—impressive for an SUV of its size.
For those craving more power, the SQ9 offers a revised 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine generating 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 7,700 lbs.
The SQ9’s quattro system takes a new direction with a rear-biased setup, allowing the vehicle to divert nearly all torque to the rear axle if necessary. This is enhanced by an electronically controlled rear differential and brake torque vectoring, improving cornering precision while still providing confidence in adverse weather conditions.
The Q9 Completes Audi’s SUV Lineup
The arrival of the Q9 signifies much more than just the introduction of another model; it effectively fills a critical gap in Audi’s offerings by providing a genuine full-size luxury SUV. This evolution means that Audi enthusiasts will no longer need to consider rival brands like BMW, Mercedes, or Cadillac.
Audi has also made significant strides in lighting technology with the Q9, introducing Digital Matrix LED headlights featuring adaptive driving beams. This advanced system uses thousands of micro-LEDs to adjust the light pattern in real-time, enhancing road visibility while minimizing glare for oncoming drivers.
Pricing for the 2027 Q9 begins at $87,700, while the performance SQ9 starts at $118,000, excluding destination charges. Deliveries are set to commence in the last quarter of 2026.
