While examining the latest version of the Google Translate app (v10.28.62.953449214.8-release), we discovered that a Live Translate widget is in development. After some adjustments, we are sharing an initial glimpse of its functionality.
The widget will feature a straightforward “Tap to start Live” prompt along with the user’s chosen target language. By tapping the widget, users can instantly initiate live translation. Moreover, it provides controls to mute the microphone, halt live translation, and adjust speaker settings.
Users can mute audio or play translations through their device’s speaker or earpiece by using the corresponding settings button on the widget. The widget also allows for easy target language switching for translations without the need to access the app.
Take a look at the new widget in action:
Currently, the widget has a limitation: it only translates what the other person is saying into the user’s chosen language, but does not yet translate the user’s speech into that language. However, Google may address this issue before the official rollout.
In addition to the Live Translate widget, we noticed other enhancements in the Google Translate app that could increase its overall utility, even if users opt not to use the widget.
Presently, live translations function solely when the Google Translate app is actively open. However, new code hints indicate future updates may allow live translations to persist even when the app is in the background. Furthermore, there could be a notification feature enabling users to manage translations without accessing the app.
Code
Continue translating when you leave the app
Live translations will keep going in the background. Please enable notifications for managing Translate from outside the app.
The Live Translation widget is already showing promising functionality, and we hope Google introduces two-way translations and launches the widget soon. We will provide updates regarding the widget and background translation features.
⚠️ An APK teardown offers insights on potential features that may appear in a service based on ongoing code work, though there is no guarantee these features will be included in future releases.
