Despite Inferior Specs, I’m Considering a Purchase of the Z Fold 8

Paul Jones / Android Authority
After extensive reviews of foldable smartphones, 2026 turned out to be the year I discovered my ideal model: the Motorola Razr Fold.
Getting my hands on the Razr Fold quickly made it one of my top Android devices in recent years. From display quality and battery longevity to charging speed and software features, Motorola has excelled with the Razr Fold. It’s a device I cherish, and until recently, I believed that nothing could persuade me to switch.
However, with the official launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, I find myself reconsidering. While this might seem odd, I understand. Samsung’s device, though intriguing, falls short in terms of specifications compared to the Razr Fold and isn’t particularly budget-friendly. Opting for the Fold 8 would involve making several compromises.
Nonetheless, the impulse to purchase the Z Fold 8 is hard to resist, even if it feels like a potential error.

The Fold 8: The Ultimate Foldable Device

My interest in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is largely driven by its design. Rumors of a wider model caught my attention. As someone who prefers more compact phones, the Fold 8’s broader shape seems ideal for my needs.
When was the last time a significant Android device was released featuring a 5.5-inch display? It certainly hasn’t been in recent years. Nowadays, the standard for “small” phones often stands at around 6.3 inches, and while these are manageable, they are not as compact as older models.
The Z Fold 8, however, boasts a 5.5-inch cover display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it shorter and wider than the prevailing 20:9 standard. This combination makes the Fold 8 the compact phone I’ve been longing for, allowing for easy one-handed usage for tasks like texting and navigating the interface. I could conveniently slip it into my pocket or belt during outdoor activities, which isn’t something I can say about the Razr Fold.
The size and weight of the Z Fold 8 excite me even more. At just 201 grams, it’s lighter than most traditional flagship devices. For comparison, the Galaxy S26 Ultra weighs 214 grams, the Pixel 10 Pro is 207 grams, and the OnePlus 15 comes in at 211 grams. The Razr Fold weighs 243 grams, making the Z Fold 8 feel like a refreshing alternative.
For Samsung to achieve a 5.5-inch display within a lightweight 201-gram body—while also including a 7.6-inch internal screen that features a well-proportioned 4:3 ratio—is impressive engineering.
Reasons to Hold Off on Pre-ordering

Despite being tempted to pre-order based on the hardware alone, I hesitate due to other aspects of the Z Fold 8.
To achieve such a compact and lightweight design, Samsung made certain compromises, particularly given the steep price tag of $1,900. The specifications tell a different story than what the hardware promises.
For instance, the camera functionality is a significant area of concern. The Z Fold 8 comes equipped with only two rear cameras—a 50MP main sensor and an ultrawide sensor—lacking a telephoto lens. The telephoto feature on the Razr Fold is something I found immensely valuable, raising doubts about shifting to a foldable that offers no equivalent.

Battery life poses another concern. Although the Z Fold 8 has a larger 4,800mAh battery than the previous generation’s 4,400mAh, it still lags behind the Razr Fold’s 6,000mAh capacity. Would I be ready to sacrifice that level of endurance? I’m uncertain, especially considering that transitioning to the Z Fold 8 means adjusting from 80W charging speeds on the Razr to just 45W here.
These issues are not trivial; they represent fundamental downgrades in crucial smartphone specifications. Would I be willing to forgo those aspects for the sake of the Fold 8’s aesthetics? That’s the dilemma I face.
Considering Samsung’s Allure

To many, my choice might appear straightforward. While a comfortable display and lighter form are appealing, they may not outweigh the benefits of a more versatile camera system, significantly larger battery, and faster charging capabilities. I get that—the idea of switching from the Razr Fold to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 might seem illogical.
Yet part of me rebels against that logic. For years, I have anticipated a foldable model that fulfills the Z Fold 8’s potential—a device that is genuinely user-friendly, reminiscent of earlier Android designs.
Though the market seems to have moved on from smaller, non-folding smartphones, devices like the Z Fold 8 could herald a return of compact flagship phones that many of us have been waiting for. Despite weaker specifications, my excitement about being part of that revival is undeniable.
