Summary
- Google has unveiled a revamped neural design for its Gemini launcher on Android, which is now being trialed in various components, including a floating overlay.
- This redesign features a flowing overlay rather than a solid shape, complemented by colorful dots in the backdrop.
- Additionally, the update introduces new buttons for the Live interface, maintaining a similarly fluid design.
Approximately two months prior, Google revealed the new neural design for Gemini that incorporates 3D visual effects and spatial animations. This innovation hints at a shift towards a new visual interface for Android XR. Initially, these effects were confined to Gemini’s home screen and standard chats. Now, however, they are being integrated into the Gemini overlay—the floating bar accessible outside the Google app—and into the Gemini Live interface.

Google seems to be testing extensive neural design elements across more features of the Gemini launcher on Android. These updates are part of version 17.43.11 of the Google app that includes Gemini. Although not yet public, we managed to activate them for testing purposes.
The revamped Gemini overlay has undergone significant changes, appearing more translucent and ethereal, with soft edges that blur while communicating with Gemini. It gives the impression that Gemini has a life of its own. The overlay now features colors that harmonize with the design and seems to be more compact than its currently available version. Floating dots add flair to the edges, and highlights are noticeable around the floating output window.
We also observed a shift in the Gemini launch animation, which now has a deliberately slowed tempo, lending it a dreamlike quality. While not fully transparent, it gives the impression of a glowing component.
A new “Talk Live” button has been introduced in the Gemini overlay, allowing users to switch to Gemini Live for a more interactive chat experience with natural pauses.
The Gemini Live interface also benefits from the neural design overhaul. The central floating button is now more streamlined and less clearly defined than the previous setup, featuring an airy glow and a constantly adapting shape.
As these features are still in the testing phase, there’s currently no timeline for when they will be made available to users.
⚠️ A teardown of the APK can provide insights into potential future features based on ongoing code. However, it is essential to note that some predicted features may never reach a market release.
