The studio created notable titles for the PSVR and Oculus Quest.
Polyarc, known for its virtual reality games Moss and Moss: Book II, has shut down, as revealed in a recent update on their LinkedIn page. A reverse recruiting sheet disclosed alongside the announcement indicates that at least 29 employees are now seeking new job opportunities.
“After almost 12 years of the exhilarating journey that comes with creating video games, our time together has reached its conclusion,” the studio stated. “As we conclude our active development, we bid farewell to each other. It has been a privilege to work together over the years and bring joy to those who enjoyed our games. Thank you to all at Polyarc; our work is now done.”
The Seattle-based studio’s Moss franchise became an early favorite in the VR scene, largely due to its unique blend of action-adventure gameplay and a camera system that allowed players to explore detailed diorama-style levels while guiding Quill, the heroic mouse. Polyarc’s titles also served as valuable content for various VR platforms, with Moss debuting on PlayStation VR and being released as a launch title for the Oculus Quest. Moss: Book II followed suit, launching on PSVR, Quest, SteamVR, and Pico, and the studio even developed one of the few VR games for Apple’s Vision Pro, a multiplayer strategy game titled Glassbreakers.
In May 2026, Polyarc attempted to reach a broader audience with Moss: The Forgotten Relic, which compiled the Moss series into a single game and adapted the gameplay to eliminate the need for a VR headset. While the sales performance of this title remains uncertain, it appears it was insufficient to sustain the studio. A significant challenge facing the company could be recent shifts in the VR landscape, which have complicated the process of launching new projects. Earlier this year, Meta shifted its focus from the metaverse towards AI initiatives, closing several of its own VR studios, further complicating funding for upcoming VR games.
Despite the closure of the studio, all of Polyarc’s games continue to be available for purchase. If you have a VR headset and haven’t yet experienced them, they are definitely worth trying.
